State College (PA) Class of 2025 linebacker Michael Gaul visited Penn State, West Virginia, UConn, and Duke for games this fall, but nothing compares to Virginia Tech for the 6-foot, 195-pound prospect. Gaul visited Virginia Tech for the conference opener against Pittsburgh on Saturday.
“It was surreal,” he said. “It’s such an amazing atmosphere and a dominating performance. VT set the bar extremely high.”
Gaul currently holds scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, UConn, Temple, Toledo, and Akron. Virginia Tech extended a scholarship offer in January.
Since extending the offer, Gaul has kept in contact with Virginia Tech, and on Saturday, he spent time with Brent Pry and Shawn Quinn.
“It’s good,” Gaul said of his relationship with Coach Pry. “He coached where I live for years, so he’s familiar with the place. It’s almost like we have a connection before even talking before just based off of that. He is very friendly and respectful in all aspects.
“Quinn and I have a good relationship,” he added. “We call about once a week and he checks up on me to see how everything is. Quinn is a great guy; he wants me to be an amazing football player but also an amazing person too.”
Having grown up around Pry’s defense at Penn State and judging by what he has seen at Virginia Tech, Gaul is confident he could transition well into the Hokies defense.
“I think I can fit in anywhere, really, but with Virginia Tech, they utilize their linebackers and have them make every type of play. Obviously, the step up from high school to college is big but it’s nothing I can’t handle.”
Aside from Virginia Tech, Gaul says Penn State, West Viginia, and Pittsburgh are recruiting him the heaviest currently, though only Virginia Tech has extended an offer.
“I’m taking the process slow to make sure I make the right choice for me,” he explained.
Gaul does not have any additional visits scheduled at this time.
